Storm Gudrun

How can we become better at dealing with natural catastrophes? When storm Gudrun struck a large area of southern Sweden on 8th January;2005, it put the functions of society and the Swedish electricity distribution;system to a severe test. The work of restoring electricity supplies started immediately. Nevertheless,;some electricity customers in sparsely populated areas were without;power for up to six weeks. The storm blew down large parts of the overhead line distribution system,;leaving 730 000 customers without power. The long periods without;power showed just how vulnerable society is to more serious disturbances. A;particular problem, which exacerbated others, was that telecommunications;stopped working. Much has been learnt by the providers of various services in society, by;companies and by individuals. This publication describes what happened,;what the effects were and what those working in the energy sector have learnt;from the most serious natural disaster to strike Sweden in recent times.

Storm Per

Lessons for a more secure energy supply after the second severe storm in the 21st century

Knowledge from the handling of the consequences of the storms ”Gudrun” and “Per” must not be wasted Within a two year period southern Sweden has been hit by severe storms that have overthrown huge volumes of forest and caused many power cuts.;The storm named “Gudrun” in 2005 was a great test for those who had to handle the restoration work. The lessons learned from that storm contributed to the fact that the work after the storm “Per” was quicker and more effective in the areas that were affected previously. ;This report summarizes the most important lessons from the handling of the storms. The main aim is to spread the knowledge to new officials and people in other areas than those concerned in the winter storms of 2005 and 2007.

Swedish Climate Strategy

The Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency have jointly delivered a basis for the first evaluation of the Swedish Climate Strategy, checkpoint 2004. The most important results from the different tasks that where included in the assignment are presented in this summing-up report. ;All together the judgement is that Sweden will achieve our commitment according to the Kyoto Protocol and the internal burden-sharing agreement within the EU. However, further policies and measures are needed to achieve our national target. In the report the EU Emissions trading scheme has been an important factor in our work and our conclusions. One of the proposals is that the present Swedish national interim target is replaced by a new structure. With this new structure measures are accomplished not only within Sweden but also jointly within the EU and the need for national measures is reduced within the short time-perspective. The report do however propose some measures to be justified in the present situation as there is an extensive need for measures in the long term. Behind the year 2010 the emissions are judged to increase in Sweden.
